Your Evening Wind Down: How to Actually Set Yourself Up for Sleep

Aug 06, 2026

How we bookend the day matters more than most of us realize. The way we wind down in the evening sets our nervous system on its trajectory for the night and shapes the quality of our sleep. So let's talk about the evening.

Why crashing doesn't work

When we're recalibrating the stress hormone connection, good rest is essential. And I know sleep can be hard to come by, especially when you're stressed and the wee hours bring everything up, those 1 to 3am wake-ups are so common. But here's the pattern that keeps us stuck: we go go go go all day and all evening, then hit bedtime, crash into bed with our brain still ticking along, and expect to fall asleep. It doesn't work that way.

Your nervous system needs a gentle ease into the evening. You need to mark the transition between daytime action and evening rest. That can be as simple as dimming the lights, lighting a candle, taking a bath or shower, or putting your legs up the wall for five minutes. None of it takes much effort, and over time it re-solidifies the pathway that tells your brain it's time for sleep.

For the brain that won't stop ticking

One of my favourite tools is a brain dump. At the end of the day, take a few minutes to journal out whatever is in your mind. The goal is not a perfect page. The goal is to get the thoughts that are distracting you, pulling at you, out of your head and onto the paper: things to do tomorrow, things you don't want to forget, reflections from the day. We're completing the stress cycle so you can go to sleep feeling cleared.

Start earlier than you think

For most people, the wind down needs to start earlier. We tend to decide it's bedtime, brush our teeth, give ourselves ten or twenty minutes, and expect sleep to arrive on command. Some people manage that. Many don't. So the real question is how we adjust the day so we're not working late into the evening, sitting in bed with a laptop, or endlessly streaming.

Remember the belief so many of us hold, that we don't have enough time to take care of ourselves. And yet many of us have this chunk of evening time. It may not be hours, it may be twenty or thirty minutes, but I want you to think about how to structure it so what you need gets taken care of.

The small things that genuinely help

Sleep in a dark room. Turn the lights lower as the evening goes on, which supports melatonin, your sleep hormone. Stay off screens, because blue light stimulates cortisol, which suppresses melatonin. Get back into a book, do a little journaling, try a few restorative yoga postures, listen to a sleep meditation, or actually connect with a loved one instead of scrolling side by side. All of these support your parasympathetic rest and digest system.
