Survival Over Reproduction: Why Stress Hijacks Your Hormones

This is one of my favourite topics, and one I genuinely wish we all learned in high school. If we understood how much our stress and our nervous system shape the rest of our health, I think we would make better and more informed choices for our bodies. So let's talk about survival over reproduction.

What your body does when it thinks there's a lion

When you're in a chronic state of stress, remember that your brain believes stress means being chased by a lion. So it does exactly what it would do in that moment. It mobilizes energy. It shunts blood away from your digestive system. Your immune function stops mattering for a moment. Your muscles tighten, ready to run or fight. Your heart beats faster and your lungs pull in more oxygen.

And there's one more thing your brain decides when it thinks a lion is chasing you: now is not a good time to have a baby.

Not everyone reading this is on a fertility journey, and that's not really the point. Your reproductive hormones, estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone, are all organized around your menstrual cycle, which your body understands as being about reproduction. And here's the mechanism that ties it together.

The cholesterol connection

Cortisol, your primary stress hormone, has receptors in every system of your body: cardiovascular, digestive, muscular, and your brain. Estrogen has receptors almost everywhere too. And cortisol, estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone are all steroid hormones, which means they share the same chemical backbone: cholesterol.

So when your brain believes your survival is genuinely threatened, it makes more cortisol so you can keep running from the lion. To do that, it takes the available cholesterol away from estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone in order to make cortisol instead. Higher cortisol, lower reproductive hormones, across multiple systems at once.

What that actually looks like

This can affect fertility, yes. But it can also affect your monthly cycle, your levels of inflammation, and your perimenopausal or postmenopausal symptoms. A lot of shifts start to happen when your body runs under stress for long stretches and cortisol rides high.

Your body and brain are not punishing you. This is a survival adaptation, and it's a brilliant one. Which changes the question we should be asking. Instead of "I have sleep issues, period pain, hot flashes, anxiety, brain fog, digestive problems, and I'm waking at 3am," seven separate problems to solve, we ask what's contributing to all seven. And when the common thread is stress and overactivation, we don't need to chase each symptom individually. We need to support the nervous system from the foundation, and the symptoms stop popping up one after another.

This is what connecting the dots means

It doesn't mean we can't help your sleep right now. Of course we can. But we support the nervous system first, alongside some symptom care, because that's what makes the change last. Stress is never stress in isolation. It touches everything. And once you see that, you realize there are actually fewer things you need to focus on, not more.
